Eisner Awards 2021 : la liste des nommés du meilleur de la BD américaine

Comme chaque année,  les Eisner Awards vont récompenser la crème de la production BD américaine. Mais comme l'année dernière, la remise des prix ne se fera pas pendant la Comic-Con de San Diego, la grand messe des convention ayant été repoussée à 2022. Néanmoins, une édition virtuelle sera de nouveau organisée du 23 au 25 juillet où seront annoncés les résultats.

Cette année, le jury est composé du libraire spécialisé Marco Davanzo (Alakazam Comics, dans la ville d'Irvine, en Californie), de Shelley Fruchey, membre du bureau de la Comic-Con, de Pamela Jackson (bibliothécaire à la San Diego State University), l'artiste et éditeur Keithan Jones (The Power Knights, KID Comics), l'éducateur Alonso Nuñez (Little Fish Comic Book Studio) et l'historien Jim Thompson (Comic Book Historians). Ils ont établi la liste des nommés au travers de 32 catégories, une de plus qu'habituellement. Ces jurés ont en effet ajouté une nouvelle entrée, Best Graphic Memoir, qu'on pourrait traduire comme Meilleures autobiographies illustrées. Les BDs autobiographiques étaient jusque là classées dans la catégorie Meilleure publication basée sur des faits réels, mais les jurés ont estimé que la qualité de la production justifiait d'ajouter une catégorie supplémentaire.

Les membres du jury 2021 des Eisner Awards

Dans cette nouvelle catégorie,  on peut citer les travaux de Craig Thompson (Ginseng Roots) et Adrian Tomine (La solitude du marathonien de la bande dessinée, traduit en France  chez Cornélius). Ce dernier fait parti du petit cercle d'artistes cumulant trois nominations: Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Jeff Lemire, James Tynion IV et Chip Zdarsky. Cependant, c'est Gene Luen Yang qui remporte la palme cette année avec cinq nominations,  essentiellement grâce à Superman écrase le Klan (traduit chez Urban) et Dragon Hoops (chez Kinaye).

Les œuvres les plus remarquées par le jury en 2020 sont Decorum par Jonathan Hickman et Mike Huddleston (Image Comics), The Department of Truth par James Tynion IV et Martin Simmons (Image), Dragon Hoops par Gene Luen Yang (First Second), Far Sector par N. K. Jemisin et Jamal Campbell (DC Comics), The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist par Adrian Tomine (Drawn & Quarterly), Stillwater par Chip Zdarsky et Ramón K. Peréz (Skybound/Image), Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen par Matt Fraction et Steve Lieber (DC), et enfin We Only Find Them When They’re Dead par Al Ewing et Simone Di Meo (BOOM! Studios). En terme d'éditeurs, Image Comics se taille une bonne part du gâteau avec 17 nominations,  uniquement devancé par Fantagraphics (19 nominations). DC Comics en récolte 9 et Marvel, 4.

Comme souvent, les auteurs francophones sont bien représentés au sein de ces nominations. On peut ainsi citer Olivier Bocquet et Jean-Marc Rochette pour Ailefroide (Casterman), Jean-David Morvan, Severine Tréfouël et David Evrard pour leur série Irena (Dargaud), Thomas Cadène et Benjamin Adam pour Soon (Dargaud) et Thomas Cadène encore, Joseph Safieddine et Clément Fabre pour leur webcomics, BFF. Enfin, à Superpouvoir, on est très content de voir Pascal Jousselin nommé pour son Imbattable (Dupuis).

Les professionnels de la BD américaine ont jusqu'au 30 juin pour voter via le site des Eisner Awards.
